Semi-Retired, making Las Vegas, Nevada his home.
Raised on a farm in Jackson Township, Indiana. Graduated from Rushville
High School with a 98° average and was very
active in sports (a four letter man), winning a Most Valuable Player Award in
1952. He got several athletic scholarships but that ended when he had a
head-on collision while on his Harley Davidson Hog, which put him in a
body cast and was on his
back for a year. Since Denny survived that and after several operations,
he
started racing midget and sprint cars. Between operations, he wore a brace
on his right leg and had to take it off while racing to fit into the cockpit and
used a pillow under his leg to hold it up while racing (the shin bone
would bend because it was non-union). One time, when racing in Louisville
Kentucky, his midget race car caught fire in front of the grandstand and while getting out
of the car and jumping on one leg (waiting for his crutches) the story got in
one of the Speed Magazines using the nick-name Denny Jones, which caught on and
was called that ever since. (his real name is Elden
Jones)... He has one brother, Ralph and four sisters, Edwina (deceased), Carol, Connie and
Kathy.
After a one year stint as a drafting engineer for Boeing
Airplane Company in Seattle Washington, Denny returned to Indiana and became a car
salesman
in 1959 (some of the cars he sold were Mercury, Edsel, Studebaker, Desoto,
Packard) and moved to California in 1962. He was in and out of the car
business for over 40 years as a Sales Manager, General Manager and Finance
Manager. In between he had a employment agency, was in the Night Club
business (Rock & Roll with live music and Go Go Girls), owned a used car
lot, ran several mobile home dealerships and was the General Manger of the
largest boat dealership in California. One of his favorite jobs was being the Director
of Memberships for "Magic Island", a high class private club in Houston , Texas.
Denny always
came back to Southern California between stints. he moved to Honolulu,
Hawaii in 1990 to become a Finance Manager for the largest Ford dealership
there. Looking to retire somewhere, he picked Las Vegas and moved there in
1994 and bought a home. Denny was a Finance Manager for one of the largest Motor
Home Dealership in United States until he had to have a knee replaced and then decided to
semi-retire. He keeps busy doing Web Sites for friends, consulting for
automobile dealerships and is on the Board of a couple of charity organizations. He helps out aspiring entertainers (booking them) and goes to a lot of entertainment
functions and parties supporting them. Denny is the Membership Director of
The Showbiz Society.
Denny has three adult children, nine grand children
and two great grand children. His oldest son Elden II lives in Spring
Valley, California with his family,
one of his daughters graduated from WestPoint and just got back from Iraq, after
a years duty there. The other son, Eric lives in Virginia Beach with
his family. His daughter, Jennifer lives in Riverside, California with her
husband (an Assistant District Attorney) and their son Christian. All of his children
have Master Degrees and Jennifer is a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and
a licensed psychologist.
